Frequently asked questions
What order should I watch Star Wars in?
There are two common orders. Release order follows the dates the movies and series came out, starting with Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977). Story (chronological) order follows when events happen in the galaxy, starting with Young Jedi Adventures season 1. For the main story, start with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. This site lists 14 movies and 34 series seasons in both orders and recommends release order for a first-time watcher. Story order is more fun once you have seen the movies.
What is the difference between release order and chronological order?
Release order sorts by release date. Story (chronological) order sorts by when the story happens. Story order moves the prequel movies (1999 to 2005) and The Clone Wars in front of A New Hope, and puts Andor, Rebels and Rogue One right before it.
Do I need to watch everything?
No. Set Show to Essential, or open the essential Star Wars watch order, to keep only the 16 titles the main story needs: the nine Skywalker saga movies, Rogue One, Andor, The Mandalorian and The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Which Star Wars titles are canon?
This site follows the official canon Lucasfilm set in 2014, the same titles StarWars.com lists. This site leaves out Legends titles such as the Holiday Special, the Ewok movies and the 2003 Clone Wars series. Visions and the LEGO specials are out too, since Lucasfilm does not count them as canon.
Is The Clone Wars canon?
Yes. The 2008 Clone Wars movie and all seven seasons of the animated series are canon. The 2003 Clone Wars series is Legends, so it is not on this site.
Where does The Mandalorian fit in the Star Wars timeline?
After Return of the Jedi and before The Force Awakens, in the New Republic era. The Mandalorian season 1 starts about five years after the Empire falls. The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew share that era.
What should I watch before The Mandalorian and Grogu?
See the what to watch before The Mandalorian and Grogu guide, a 4-title shortcut through the Mandalorian seasons and The Book of Boba Fett.
